Collegiate Track National Championships

Rolling along the highway and passing 2 NASCAR semi trucks plastered with numbers, driver signatures, and more sponsors than the back of a cycling jersey (and Andre and Justin freaking out because of this) could only mean one thing-the ASU cycling team was on their way to Collegiate Track Nationals!!!

Over the weekend, 5 members of the App State Cycling Team competed in the Collegiate Track National Championships at Major Taylor Velodrome in Indianapolis, Indiana. Andre Vandenberg, Justin Evans, Evan Wynn, Nina Laughlin, and Kathryn Smith braved 3 days of missed classes, smoky hotel rooms, and more than 20 hours in a bumpy school van in order to score points for App in the overall team omnium. Despite having very minimal track experience (Track? Is that like running, or NASCAR?? And wtf is a velodrome?), the ASU cycling team managed to scrape up some good results. Andre had impressive runs in the men's 4K and 1K pursuits, placing 18th and 10th, respectively. Nina placed 19th in the women's 3K pursuit as well. Justin, Evan, and Kathryn helped the team rack up some points in the Co-ed team sprint, along with Andre and Nina, placing 9th overall. Together, these 5 members of the team scored 9 points toward the team omnium. Hopefully their efforts will be good enough to place App onto one of those coveted steps of the overall team omnium podium in the spring.

Up next, App will be sending 8 individuals to compete in the Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships in Angel FIre, NM, October 28-30!
