VTech Weekend and Upcoming Home Race
This weekend the Appalachian State University Cycling Team travelled to Blacksburg, VA in pursuit of locking down the ACCC team omnium. Although a previous race was cancelled due to heavy rain the day before Virginia Tech decided to ignore the adverse conditions and allow us to race both days. With a difficult schedule of three races on the first day and a long XC race on the second this would be a good test of fitness for the upcoming home conference championship race, and national championships.
It was a wet chilly morning on the outskirts of the booming college campus city of Blacksburg. The old farm, and white pebble parking lot was a familiar scene for those who have raced at Virginia Tech before. Those familiar, knew the treacherous roots and tire ripping rocks of the uphill TT and super D course. Just under two miles of climbing and crawling over technical features had most riders gasping for air. Hayden, Zeb, and Jacob took 2nd, 3rd, and 5th in the TT and Annie taking the win! Next on the agenda was the short track XC race at the saddle of the trail. This would contain a flowy and blazingly fast descent into a grueling gravel climb. Hayden, and Annie took the silver in their respective categories, with Maryann finishing close behind. Johnny and Matt battled hard to rack up more points in the Men’s B. Last for the day was the super D, which contained the uphill TT course in reverse. The course was loose, wet, and would test the abilities of riders at every skill. Jordan blazed through the single track taking the top spot in Men’s A, Riley, and Elliot had strong finishes in Men’s B and Men’s C.
The last event of the weekend was the XC race taking place on Sunday. The lollipop styled course with a trail rolling out to a 4 mile loop consisted of a large loose rocky climb, a bone shattering descent, technical rock gardens, and fast gravel sections. Annie took the win and Zeb sprinted in with a strong 4th place finish. Mechanicals and crashes plagued the racers, but the team had very respectable finishes in all categories. Next week is our home race at Rocky Knob MTB park which will be an exciting event for the team, fans, and family to come watch and cheer us on.
