West Virginia MTB Weekend Recap

The App State Cycling team sent 10 riders to West Virginia last weekend for conference racing at Big Bear Lake.  It was not as mountainous as we’re used to, but there were some good descents nonetheless.

Saturday started with a Super D gravity event.  It was run as a mass start, so the whole shot into the woods was critical.  Through the chaos, App State came out on top.  Hayden Miller and Matt Moosa ran one and two in the Men’s A.  In Men’s B, Jordan Bouldin and Francesco Marafino could not quite find room to pass on the trail but still scored a solid 2nd and 3rd.  Blake Ferree won the Men’s C race with Justin Evans overcoming a late race mishap to hold onto 2nd.  Eric Burton and Matt Jones were 4th and 5th respectively. Unfortunately, Jacob Richard flatted, and Riley Parr, the resident Enduro enthusiast, sent a drop a little too far in practice and fractured his arm.  We wish him a speedy recovery.

The second event on Saturday was a short track race with an infamous drop every lap that has foiled more than a few ACC riders in years past.  Matt Moosa and Hayden Miller lapped the field multiple times on their way to another 1st and 2nd in the Men’s A with Jacob Richard surviving a few exciting trips over the drop to secure 6th.  Jordan Bouldin easily won the B race with Francesco in 5th, but unfortunately Justin had to pull out due to back pain.  Blake took another victory in the C race with Matt unleashing a blistering sprint for 3rd.

The only event on Sunday was a fairly rough Cross Country race, and the team performed well yet again.  Matt Moosa won the 20 mile Men’s A race with Hayden coming in 2nd.  These two dominated the field all weekend.  Jacob had yet another flat and had to walk it in, but he’ll be back at it soon (hopefully with some beefier tires and more Stan’s).  Justin overcame his back issues to win the B race with Jordan coming in 3rd after two wrong turns.  Eric, Matt, and Blake, swept the C race to cap off another great weekend .

We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect weekend to race mountain bikes.  The weather was beautiful, and the team capitalized.  We look forward to continuing our success at NC State after a rest weekend.
